Ok, so I haven’t been a Green Lantern fan my entire life, but it’s been a good, long time. I saw the Ryan Reynolds movie and still think it’s not as HORRIBLE as some people say. Granted, I do enjoy an awful lot of pure garbage. The animated series was amazing and The Sinestro Corps War was mind blowing reading. So, when I heard about Lanterns coming up on HBO I was…cautiously optimistic.
Some stuff looked cool, lots didn’t. Overall, it just looked kinda drab. And for a comic series that legitimately feels like it brings bright light to its pages, that’s disappointing.
The first episode was bleh. So many inconsistencies with the source material, but the writers either don’t care or they gloss over it with some dialog. Why is Hal Jordan training John Stewart instead of letting the ring pick its next bearer? Yeah, that’s strange. Why is the GL uniform now actual material instead of a construct? Ehhhh….they don’t really address that one. Anyway, there was just enough to keep me going until the next episode.
So, Episode 2 rolls around and it’s better. Still some same issues. Hey, how does John Stewart keep a construct going after breaking connection with the ring? Oh, yeah…that’s really rare. Next. But just when I was getting frustrated with characters sitting around talking like they were in a superhero show without doing any cool superhero stuff, Hal charges up the ring, flies to Oa and had a chat with Sinestro.
Does Sinestro look like he has most definitely not been working out while in prison? Sure. Does he look even slightly as threatening or menacing as any Master of Fear should? Nope. But at least the show is trying. Tonight is episode 3. Let’s see if we can continue this slightly upward trajectory.
