One thing I’ve been hearing a lot from various people in the writing industry is that some of my main characters are “bad guys”. Words like “irredeemable” and “unsympathetic” crop up here and there. This strikes me as strange, especially considering how many such characters are in some pretty damn good shows / movies / books. There’s Breaking Bad, The Sopranos (or anything with a mobster main character) and The Bachelor just to name a few. Ok, so maybe that last one is on the fence, but have you seen some of these horrible singles sniping, bickering and snitching on each other? And MY characters can be unsympathetic??
Sure, a lot of this boils down to personal tastes. Personally, I love crime fiction. Sons of Anarchy is still one of my favorite shows and pretty much everyone in that show was a horrible human being. It’s cool to walk for a while in a bad guy’s shoes and every so often, one might even redeem themselves along the way.
Blind Eye is a book about a hitman training a new partner in the ways of a professional criminal. The main characters are a quirky team, inching toward friendship status. They have problems, faults and good qualities. Mostly, I wrote it because hitman stories are cool. Am I in favor of real-life killers? Come on, now. Do I like a good story set in an outlaw’s world? Let me think about that while I take a few minutes to play some Grand Theft Auto. Heh.
This book never got a real chance, but is being re-released with a shiny new cover and everything. I meant to do more of them, but couldn’t since the first one didn’t really produce. Well, we all get a second chance and with this re-release, I’m already planning on the next books in this series. Give it a read if you like crime stories, mysteries set on the wrong side of the law, or can appreciate some thrilling action topped off by one HELL of a long-range sniper shot.
